14-Year-Old Accused of Killing Math Teacher Colleen Ritzer

A 14-year-old high school student is accused of killing a math teacher, whose body was discovered in a wooded area near Danvers High School in Massachusetts.

Colleen Ritzer, 24, of Andover, was found dead early Wednesday, and the boy will be arraigned on a murder charge, Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said.

Police started investigating after Ritzer was reported missing late Tuesday night because she had not returned home from work and was not answering her cellphone. Investigators found blood in a second-floor school bathroom and soon located the victim, he said. He did not say how Ritzer died.

"She was a very, very respected, loved teacher," Blodgett said, calling the killing a "terrible tragedy."

The boy also was reported missing Tuesday after not coming home from school. He was spotted walking along a road in neighboring Topsfield at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

His name was not made public because of his age. He faces arraignment Wednesday in juvenile court, where proceedings are closed to the public.

Ritzer had a Twitter account where she gave homework assignments, encouraged students and described herself as a "math teacher often too excited about the topics I'm teaching."

There is no reason to believe anyone else was involved and there is no public safety danger, Blodgett said.

All Danvers public schools were closed Wednesday.

Ritzer is the second teacher allegedly killed by a student in the U.S. this week. A Sparks, Nev., middle school teacher was allegedly shot by a 12-year-old student on Monday.

False alarm fines increase 500 percent

Some fines in Harrisburg are going up…some five times the amount they are now.

The fees include false alarms for fires and burglaries. They have been a real problem in Harrisburg for police officers and the city fire department--more than you would imagine.

There are fines for multiple offenses, but those fines are now going up enough so that frequent violators will notice.

City Council Tuesday night approved a law that will increase 2nd false alarm fines from $10 to $50, 3rd false alarm from $25 to $50 and 4th false alarm from $35 to $100.

Each additional false alarm will cost $500 per incident.

“These do cost a significant amount of money to get the fire department to respond to false alarms and police to burglar alarms. So we have to make sure we crack down and that these happen less, and if they do keep happening, then there are consequences,” said Brad Koplinski with Harrisburg City Council.

The city said more false alarms come from businesses than from residential properties. The new fines will take effect in the coming weeks.

USDA recalls 23,000 pounds of meat

The USDA has issued an "urgent" recall of meat products sold in grocery stores.

Reser's Fine Foods is recalling nearly 23,000 pounds of chicken, ham and beef products because of a possible listeria contamination.

The items include 12 ounce to five-pound packs of premade chicken salad, ham salad, potato salad and baked beans. They were sold under brands including Cobble Street, Cross Valley Farms and Millers.

The products bear the establishment number "EST 13520" or "PL3520" inside the USDA mark of inspection. All of the products were distributed to stores across dozens of states, including Pennsylvania.

Former HACC VP accused of buying self, family gifts with school credit card

A former vice president of the Harrisburg Area Community College is facing federal wire fraud charges.

Nancy Rockey, 55, of Harrisburg, allegedly purchased $228,000 worth of items using a HACC credit card.

Prosecutors say she was authorized to use the card only for work-related items, but instead purchased online gift cards to buy things for herself, family and friends.

Rockey worked at HACC for 32 years before resigning last year. 

Boy charged with murder in teacher's killing

A bloody mystery played out Wednesday in Danvers, Massachusetts, where students were mourning the death of a well-liked young educator found slain in the woods behind the high school where she taught.

Authorities on Wednesday charged 14-year-old Philip Chism with the murder of Colleen Ritzer, whose body was found after she failed to return home from work Tuesday.

Chism was arraigned Wednesday afternoon in Salem, Massachusetts, on a murder charge and was ordered held without bail. A grand jury must decide if he will be charged as an adult.

According to the accusation read in court, the boy is accused of assaulting and beating Ritzer to death.

According to Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett, police found Ritzer's body after discovering blood in a second-floor bathroom of Danvers High School, where the 24-year-old was a beloved math teacher known for posting inspirational messages to her Twitter account and offering her students extra help when they needed it.

"There's not words to describe her," freshman Spencer Wade said of Ritzer. "She's such an excellent teacher."

All seven schools in the suburban Boston town were closed Wednesday as a result of the investigation.

The report of Colleen Ritzer's death came two days after a student with a gun killed a teacher in Sparks, Nevada.

Chism, who also had been reported missing Tuesday afternoon, was arrested early Wednesday after being found walking down a street, Blodgett said. There are no other suspects, he said.

The connection between Ritzer and the boy was not clear. In a news conference held before the boy's arraignment, Blodgett declined to discuss details of any connection between the teacher and the boy, citing his status as a juvenile. He did not say whether the boy is a student at the school.

"This is a terrible tragedy for Colleen Ritzer and the entire Danvers community," Blodgett said.

Ritzer graduated from Assumption College in 2011, the school said on Twitter. She was pursuing a master's degree in school counseling at Salem State University, that school said in a prepared statement.

"As a dedicated teacher, Colleen wanted to work with and help children with special needs," an e-mail from the university read. "She believed children have much to offer and often do not realize how special they are as individuals. In her application to Salem State she said she was dedicated to 'helping students in times of need.'"

On her Twitter account, Ritzer interspersed homework assignments and exhortations to work through tough math problems with cooking talk and inspirational messages.

"No matter what happens in life, be good to people," she wrote in August. "Being good to people is a wonderful legacy to leave behind."

Ritzer's aunt, Shirley Martellucci, said the family is in shock.

"We're holding up as best we can," she said.

Ritzer, who lived with her parents, was in her second year teaching at the school, Martellucci said. She had never had any trouble with students, she said.

"She always wanted to be a teacher, all her life," Martellucci said. "It's just unbelievable that someone would take her life at such a young age."

The district issued a statement Wednesday calling Ritzer "a dynamic and brilliant ray of light."

"Colleen Ritzer was everything one could ask for in a teacher -- dedicated, passionate and invested in her students. Our entire community will feel this loss for many years to come," the school said.

Ritzer's students were similarly dismayed.

Ritzer "was literally the sweetest, most harmless person ever," Twitter user samanthawxo posted Wednesday. "She always wanted to help anyone in any way she could."

It wasn't immediately clear why the district closed all of its schools after the discovery of Ritzer's body.

Danvers, a town of about 26,000 people about 20 miles northeast of Boston, has a high school, a middle school and five elementary schools.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Wednesday that Public Welfare Secretary Beverly Mackereth told the paper's editorial board she is "rethinking" the 17-month-old test.

The test, implemented under Mackereth's predecessor, Gary Alexander, requires applicants to prove they don't have significant personal assets before they can qualify for food stamps. People younger than 60 cannot have more than $5,500 in assets.

Critics say the application process is so complicated that many deserving people cannot get benefits.

During the first year of the test, the newspaper says, 4,000 applicants were turned down for having too many financial resources, while 111,000 households were denied food stamps because they failed to provide proper documentation.

Pot poll first – majority of Americans support legalization

A new Gallup poll out Wednesday morning shows for the first time that a majority of Americans, 58 percent, supports the legalization of marijuana.

Gallup says the number is a 10 percent increase over last year. The organization first started tracking the question in 1969 when just 12 percent of the county favored the legal use of the drug.

Although marijuana is considered an illegal drug by the federal government, 20 states plus the District of Columbia now allow it for medical use. Washington state and Colorado have passed legislation permitting recreational use.

News 8 compared the latest Gallup numbers with a News 8 Franklin and Marshall poll taken in February of this year. The F&M poll found that most Pennsylvanians are OK with medicinal marijuana use. But a majority of those surveyed, 55 percent, are still against legalization.

George Jones Dead at 81

UPDATE: Jones’ funeral will take place on Thursday, May 2nd at The Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tenn., where the late country singer was a member since 1956. The service, which will begin at 10 a.m., will be open to members of the public.

A private visitation for family, friends, and fellow performers will take place the day before.

"George would have wanted his fans and friends everywhere to be able to come and pay their respects along with his family," his publicist, Kirt Webster, said in a statement to ET.

Jones' wife, Nancy also thanked everyone for the support she's been receiving in the days since his passing.

"Thanks to George’s friends, fans, and loved ones for the outpouring of love at this terrible time," she said. "I love you all."

The family has asked that contributions be made to the Grand Ole Opry trust fund in lieu of flowers.

Country music legend George Jones passed away on Friday, April 26, 2013 after being hospitalized for a fever and irregular blood pressure. The Country Music Hall of Famer was 81.

Jones, born on Sept. 12, 1931 in Saratoga, Texas, is best known for his songs He Stopped Loving Her Today, Walk Through This World With Me and Tender Years.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years Nancy Jones, his sister Helen Scroggins and his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Following the backlash surrounding Gwyneth Paltrow's crowning as People magazine's World's Most Beautiful Woman, ET caught up with the Oscar winner's mom, Blythe Danner, at the Tribeca Film Festival Awards where she dished on her daughter's new title.

The title of the forthcoming album was inspired by the 1995 film Braveheart starring Mel Gibson on the First War of Scottish Independence against England. Ashanti says she channeled the underdog mentality and raw passion in the film.

"It's not an even playing ground, so I feel like with the [major labels], they're bossed up. They have the big engine and all the artists signed to them and with the indies, it's depending," she told Rap-Up.

"It's homemade, it’s homegrown. It's a lesser engine. So the metaphor I was using was being brave and putting your blood and guts into it and fighting passionately to win."

Whereas Ashanti's first three albums, all of which received platinum certification, were released under major record label Murder Inc. Records (now known as "The Inc. Records"), her fourth album, The Declaration, and her upcoming fifth are released under her own label, Written Entertainment.

In addition to her new music, Ashanti has also landed a new acting gig on the Lifetime series Army Wives as a regular in the show's seventh season. She has dabbled in film acting over the years as well, starring in The Muppets' Wizard of Oz in 2005 and most recently acting in Resident Evil: Extinction in 2007.

Country crooner Jason Aldean and wife of 11 years, Jessica Ussery, have found themselves in rough waters as his rep admits that the singer's marriage is on the rocks. 

"I can confirm that Jason and his wife are having problems, but there is nothing more to share with the press at this time," Aldean's rep tells People in reaction to reports that the two have already split. "It's a private family matter, and we hope everyone will respect that he would like to keep it that way."

Busey’s concept for the video involves household appliances and a mechanical dog which the 68 year-old Point Break actor portrays in the commercial.

Busey outlines the video, dominates writing the script, and casts the actors, all of which Rinna and Jillette are not happy with.

''Gary had surprisingly picked two women of the same age to play his wife and his daughter in some sort of weird Mormon sister-wife thing,” Jillette says. '' It’s creepy.”

Busey's improvisation of a 'mechanical dog' is one of a man-turned-vomiting creature , in short, a portrayal that is not very convincing to his team mates or Ivanka Trump who asks Busey, "Was the mechanical dog barking or throwing up?"
